Anatomy of a Micro-Spicule, the Latest Skincare Star

Harnessing microscopic support systems to go deeper and deliver unprecedented topical skincare rejuvenation results.

Micro-spicules are getting a lot of (well-deserved) attention these days. But before we understand the role of the micro-spicule in skincare, and most specifically those in the new Needle Lift products as part of the Medi Lift Daily Care collection, we should learn a little about spicules in general. In biology, a spicule is a miniscule, sharp needle-like anatomical structure that provides support to some invertebrate organisms that lack a skeleton. They’re most common in sponges but also feature in corals, plankton and nematodes.

Generally, all spicules–except for the behemoths that are sun spicules–are microscopic but in skin care products we refer to them as ‘micro-spicules’ to emphasize how extremely tiny they are. As structural elements, most sponges grow bio-mineralized crystalline spicules (which are also known as axial filaments) made up of various configurations of silica or calcium.

The micro-spicules is harvested from hydrolyzed sea sponges are what interest us here for Medi Lift’s Needle Lift Daily Care collection. When combined with active ingredients like peptides, hyaluronic acid, plant stem cells, and botanicals, they work to open microscopic channels deeper into the epidermis than a normal topical product can. That’s the tingling sensation you feel right after application; indication that the potent actives are going exactly where you want them the most as they get to work on restoration and repair.

Medi Lift Needle Lift is a rejuvenating skincare collection built around micro-spicule technology. Developed and manufactured by Japanese beauty tool specialists and product formulators Ya-Man, Ltd, the initial US launch consists of five Needle Lift products containing our proprietary Golden Needle Complex–to be configured into three different three-product regimens.

What’s the difference?

Medi Lift Skincare is a rejuvenating topical skincare collection inspired by microneedling’s ability to deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin but without the use of needles or equipment. Incorporating advanced technology, the initial two lines include Needle Lift products containing our proprietary micro-spicule-intense Golden Needle Complex–to be configured into three different three-product regimens–and Micro-Moments Special Care Collection, a series of occlusive patches containing self-dissolving micro-tips. Developed and manufactured by Japanese beauty tool specialists and product formulators Ya-Man, Ltd.
